Shibori is a Japanese word referring to a family of ancient resist-dyeing techniques. The word “shibori” comes from the verb shiru, which means “to tie” or “to bind.”

Shibori is thought to predate written history and was primarily used for decorating fabrics for kimonos and other clothing before it became known in the West during the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Shibori is a form of resist dyeing applied to the fabric. The color designs are created either by tying or stitching the cloth before dyeing or by wrapping the cloth around an object so that areas on the opposite side can be dyed.
